PROF. LEE-ANN LAURENT APPLEGATE, PHD
Professor Applegate is a biologist, specializing in cell biology and tissue engineering for regeneration of the skin and musculoskeletal tissues. Since 1993, she has run the cell therapy unit in CHUV and in 2010 became Associate Professor in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Unit of Regenerative Therapy inside the University of Lausanne.
After obtaining her PhD in dedicated cellular and molecular repair of the skin at the University of New Mexico (Albuquerque) in 1987, she became a postdoctoral researcher at the Lovelace Medical Foundation (Albuquerque) and the MD Anderson Cancer Center of the University of Texas, in partnership with the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
In 1989, she moved to Switzerland to join the Swiss Institute for Experimental Cancer Research (ISREC), located in Epalinges, and spent two years there as a “Visiting Scientist”. She then joined the Department of Dermatology at the University Hospital, where she focused on the effects of oxidative stress on fetal skin, compared to young and old skin. From 2000 to 2005, she directed research on the mechanisms of wound healing and tissue repair, especially on the use of human fetal cells in this area. In 2005, she published in The Lancet original research on the use of human fetal cells in the treatment of burns, a publication that has been a real breakthrough in the field.
Professor Applegate continued her work on cell engineering for the regeneration of the skin and musculoskeletal tissues in collaboration with several services and CHUV research groups at EPFL. She also developed cell banks for GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) used clinically. She is the author of three patents, including the use of fetal cells as “first cover” in the treatment of burns.
